Distance and Instructional Library Services

amy was the member of the Distance and Instructional Library Services (DILs) department in the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center (Sherman Library) of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for several years.

DILs librarians focus on the information needs of NSU distance students, regardless of their geographic location or distance learning format.

NSU is not your typical university - it is primarily a graduate level population who may be taking courses:

  • face-to face at a distant location
  • face-to face at the main campus location
  • online
  • video

And those students might be in Florida, in another state, or in another country. Needless to say that DILs librarians travel quite a bit - whether it's in Florida or Las Vegas or Athens.

Nor is the Sherman Library your typical library. Opening in December 2001, the Sherman Library is a five-story joint-use library open to the NSU community and Broward County residents of all ages.

When they're not on the road, DILs librarians can be found:

  • creating an extensive network of help pages, manuals, online tutorials and assignments
  • staffing a busy reference desk
  • working on collection development
  • teaching a class in the Sherman Library
  • planning their next library instruction trip
