Learning
Libraries and Learning
Libraries are a key to the lifelong learning of their users. From public
to academic
to special
libraries, each is there to guide the the informational
skill development
of their clientele.
Distance Learning
Library services and resources should be available to all library
users, regardless
of their physical location.
Distance
learning is challenging enough for students - institutional
services,
including the library, should be geared to provide
distance
learners with the same
level and quality service that
would be afforded to local
learners.
Information Literacy
Simply providing library users with materials is not enough, libraries
should strive
to assist in the development of their users' information
literacy skills and
research techniques through instructional
sessions, individual contact, and
collaborative efforts.
Outcomes Assessment
As institutions and accrediting agencies focus on accountability
for student
learning, libraries must assess the impact they
have made on their users' learning.
Traditional evaluation of
a single library contact with a student must give way to
outcomes
assessments which take a big picture approach to evaluating
the impact
of libraries in a user's education.
