Library Instruction

amy and Library Instruction

amy has been involved with library instruction program for nearly a decade, as intruction librarian in a community college and as assistant department head in a larger univeristy.

amy would have never guessed that she would end up at the front of the room - public speaking absolutely terrified her. Needless to say, she was rather shocked when she found herself teaching a library instruction class on her third day on the job.


amy as Instruction Librarian

amy served as Instruction Librarian at Anne Arundel Community College for several years in the Truxal Library. During that time her responsibilities were of course largely instructional, however she also continued development of her Web and online tutorial design skills.

Responsibilities included:

  • Provide & coordinate library instruction sessions, including credit legal research & non-credit real estate research courses.
  • Teach faculty & staff training sessions,including "Advanced Internet Searching," "Student Research & Electronic Information," & "Social Science Resources on the Internet.".
  • Develop library instruction guidelines.
  • Plan a library instruction computer lab.
  • Provide reference services, including research consultation & mediated online searching.
  • Research & recommend print & electronic resources.
  • Oversee library operations during evening hours.
  • Create print & electronic instructional aides & guides for library clientele & staff, including:
    • a library tutorial to meet needs of Student Success & freshman English courses.
    • Jumpstart! Web pages to support English department courses.
  • Represent the library in appropriate campus activities & professional associations, including:
    • Educational Policies & Curriculum Committee (campus curriculum development).
    • Professional Development & Training Work Group (faculty & staff training).
    • Outcomes Assessment Team (student competencies).

amy as Assistant Head

amy served as the Assistant Head for Distance and Instructional Library Services at Nova Southeastern University for several years in the Sherman Library. During that time her responsibilities primarily involved delivering library services to distance students, however she also continued development of her reference and collection development skills.

Responsibilities included:

  • Develop & maintain departmental Web presence of over 11000 Distance & Instructional Library Services departmental Web files, including converting files into new format for library Web site re-design.
  • Develop instructional tutorials and teaching materials for undergraduate & graduate audiences, as well as review other librarians' tutorials.
  • Provide library instruction sessions at main campus & distance locations, including traveling to both in-state and out-of-state locations to teach library sessions to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Maintain & revise library instruction manuals.
  • Provide electronic & traditional reference services.
  • Research & recommend over 3000 resources for the general sciences, mathematics & computer science.
  • Represent the department in library committees.
