Outcomes Assessment
Libraries and Outcomes Assessment
Assessment has been one of those education buzz words for many years in the library environment, particularly as it relates to information literacy. In recent years there has been an increased focus placed on assessing student learning rather than focusing on skill-based measurements.
One of the things that amy considered very significant during her time at Anne Arundel Community College was her work as part of the Outcomes Assessment Team. Through some careful suggestions and discussions, information literacy was recognized as being a critical skill for all students.
At Nova Southeastern University, the library was beginning to work with individual programs to meet the charge of accreditation bodies: assess the impact of the library on student learning in a timely and ongoing manner.
Assessment for the Distance and Instructional Library Services was taking several different paths:
- Library Research Modules - guided learning which for some programs students receive follow-up individualized feedback from a librarian to ensure that the student is on the right track
- bibliometric analysis studies - examining citations of student writings and attempting to assign qualitative values to the resources being utilized.
