Library Tech

If I never touch another computer, it'll be too soon!

Technology is everywhere in today's libraries - from classroom reserves to keyless entry to security systems to books. A few years ago, amy had a seventeen year old student say that she couldn't stand using computers and that she planned to avoid using them in the future. All amy could do was smile and wonder what desert island the student was planning to move to.

eBooks

Like them or not, eBooks seem to be here to stay. Personally, amy can't stand reading a book on a computer screen. It just isn't the same to her as curling up in bed and reading. But, for those who need an eBook, amy has collected a number of links to sites that provide eBooks.

eReserves

amy really likes eReserves - so mush easier for students to use then having to come into the library to simply photocopy, photocopy, photocopy. Professors can use the course reserves in the classroom setting and can place items on reserves much more easily. Librarians can track materials for copyright concerns and they no longer have to hassle students about bring a class syllabus or remembering their professors' names to locate reserves items.

Tutorials

Okay, okay. amy has created lots of tutorials over the years. So how do you go about creating a tutorial. Start by taking a look at what other libraries' tutorials and read the "how-to's".

Usability Testing

We all should really do a lot more usability testing than we currently do. Having a few coworkers is not enough to test our websites and tutorials - there a plenty of resources on the Web about conducting good usability testing.

Wireless

Wireless is a great technology for users in library that can afford it. Users love being able o use their own laptop anywhere in the library (or use one of the library's laptops anywhere in the library for that matter). Take a look at some links related to wireless technology in libraries and see how it can change your library too
