Electronic Plagiarism

Libraries and Academic Honesty

Plagiarism is nothing new. Whether it's a student purchasing an essay from a paper mill or a journalist claiming the words of others as his own, plagiarism continues to be an issue.

The change that has occured is that technology facilitates plagiarism amd makes it difficult for faculty to prevent and detect. Librarians need to be partners with both faculty and students.

Faculty need librarians to assist with:

  • Promoting a culture that encourages academic honesty.
  • Appropriate uses of resources.
  • ssignment design to discourage plagiarism.

Students need librarians to assist with:

  • Understanding intellectual property concepts.
  • Correct uses of resources
  • citing resources.
